Derek

I hated the fact that Nathan was the one who could actually go after Ingrid. I should be the one to rescue her, and as I drove from the airport in Tennessee, I had a gnawing sensation in the pit of my stomach that he would mess things up.

There was no way for me to know, either, which made the situation worse for wear. I was tired from weeks of running around, chasing what felt like my shadow. I still didn’t have anything to show for it, and it had cost me a fight I didn’t think I would have to engage in. Just the thought that I wasn’t going to be the automatic successor made me flush with anger.

What right did Malaki or Seth have in allowing me to be challenged? It was my birthright to be pack master!

I growled under my breath as I neared the woods. My eyes were heavy, and I could barely keep them open. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had a proper sleep, and I was walking into a war zone. My best bet was to catch a few winks before I went to the reservation. The time on the dashboard read ten eleven – I figured the fight could wait until after I’d rested.

My eyes instantly obeyed and closed, and my head bobbed back onto the headrest. I was instantly knocked out. I don’t know how long I slept, but the sounds of howling in the distance entered my subconscious and tapped me awake. I blinked rapidly and looked around, forgetting for a moment where I was.

The phone vibrating on the passenger seat brought me back in a jolt. I picked it up and sighed when I saw who was calling.

“Where are you, Derek?” Malaki grunted on the other end.

“I’ll be there in a minute. Don’t want to keep you all waiting,” I said grudgingly and hung up. They wanted a fight, so they’ll get one. If I could do better, I’d have just left the pack and be done with them. But wolves can’t survive on their own without the aid and resources of a pack. I’d be condemning myself to destitution if I walked away.

I got out of the car and slammed the door shut. The reservation was only a mile and half inland, and I tore through dense foliage and thickets as I made my way to the boxing ring. I could hear the buzz of activity as the wolves gathered, waiting for me to make an entrance. The chatter died down when I stepped into the clearing.

“Derek!” Jayson exclaimed and ran over to me. “I thought you weren’t going to make it.”

“I’m here. Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” I said sarcastically. In fact, I would rather be anywhere but there.

“I don’t like this,” Talia, the young female wolf, added. It would appear her and Jayson were inseparable, and especially after they followed me to Montana.

“Derek,” Malaki announced. “Over here.”

I clapped Jayson on the shoulder and trudged over to Malaki.
